REAS FoundationIMPORTANT NOTE: REGRETTABLY, DUE TO A LACK OF GENERAL ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT WITH WHICH TO CONDUCT FUNDRAISING AND THE DIMINISHING FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM WITHIN THE COMMUNITY, THE REAS FOUNDATION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTING ADDITIONAL APPLICATIONS, AT THIS TIME, FOR THE CURRENT HEATING SEASON. THE REMAINING FUNDS (currently enough to provide energy assistance to approximately 5 low-income senior families) WILL BE DISTRIBUTED BASED UPON THE ORDER IN WHICH THE REQUESTS WERE RECEIVED. IF ADDITIONAL FUNDS BECOME AVAILABLE, SAID FUNDS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED BASED UPON THE CURRENT BACKLOG OF APPLICATIONS (currently at 23).
The REAS (Residential Energy Assistance for Seniors) Foundation, is a 501c3 all-volunteer non-profit organization built upon the belief that the greatness of a community is ultimately judged not by the beauty or magnificence of its structures, but rather, by its compassion, contributions, and care for its most vulnerable members. Our service area is exclusive to the Town of Sturbridge.
Rising energy costs, which in turn drive the costs of many associated items, coupled with fixed incomes, have placed many of our seniors in difficult and dangerous predicaments. Their incomes are now fast outpaced by escalating energy prices. Choices between fuel, food, and prescriptions medications are becoming all too common for many of our seniors.
In its five years of operation, the REAS Foundation has recieved donations of $118,634.50 and has disbursed $107,000 to qualifying Sturbridge senior households. Expenses over the first three years (2008-2010), due to start-up costs and significant insurance premiums resulted in combined expenditures of $13,467 or an average of $4,489 annually for operational expenses. The subsequent two years of operation 2011-2012 have seen a total operational budget of only $1,204 (combined)for an average of $602 annually, as decisions were made to withdraw from active on-the-ground fundraising events, which necessitated the liability insurance coverage and significant premiums in recognition of a need to protect our volunteers and most imporantly donor funds from being leveraged by way of accident claims at fundraising events. Equally, members themselves have help defray the cost of expenses through their generosity.
